The Hamilton Island Resort, a Popular Queensland Holiday Destination on the Great Barrier Reef, Reportedly Set to be Sold by US Investment Giant.
A major tropical holiday destination situated within the Great Barrier Reef has reportedly been sold to a US-based investment group for a sum said to be worth 1.2 billion Australian dollars.
“We are honored to build on the vision and dedication of the family owners has built in the center of the iconic Great Barrier Reef,” said a senior representative.
The Reported Acquisition Agreement
The New York-headquartered, Blackstone – which also owns the casino-hotel chain Crown Resorts – announced it had signed an deal to purchase the Hamilton Island resort from the Oatley family owners, subject to customary approvals from regulators.
The sellers released a statement noting they were pleased with the new owners of an island that holds a “special place in the hearts of countless Australians” and is known as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
Hamilton Island's Scale and Features
Located roughly 900 kilometers north of Brisbane and about 500km south of Cairns, Hamilton spans more than 1,130 hectares spanning two separate islands.
Roughly thirty percent of the land is developed, featuring a substantial array of amenities:
- Five hotels
- More than 20 restaurants and bars
- 20 retail outlets
- An 18-hole championship golf course on neighboring Dent Island
- A marina and a functioning airport
Hamilton Island is described as a significant employer in the Whitsunday region, supporting a large on-island community and staff, as well as a broad network of regional partners, vendors, and area businesses.
A Look Back at The Island's History
The deceased billionaire Robert Oatley, a renowned sailor and vintner, first bought the resort for $200 million in the year 2003 after spotting the island from aboard a yacht while sailing through the Whitsundays.
Hamilton's major development phase initially started in the 1980s. For decades prior that, it was home to simple iron huts and modest accommodations that housed Australian vacationers from the outback and southern states.

The acquiring firm also owns luxury hotels and resorts in several nations, including Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The Whitsunday region is the ancestral territory of the Ngaro people. The name derives from Captain James Cook, who sailed the Endeavour through the archipelago on Sunday 3 June 1770, which was the Christian holiday of Whit Sunday.
