The French Prime Minister Steps Down After Under One Month Amidst Extensive Criticism of New Cabinet
The French political turmoil has deepened after the new prime minister dramatically resigned within moments of announcing a cabinet.
Rapid Resignation During Political Turmoil
France's latest leader was the third premier in a single year, as the country continued to lurch from one political crisis to another. He resigned moments before his first cabinet meeting on the start of the week. The president accepted Lecornu's resignation on Monday morning.
Strong Opposition Over Fresh Cabinet
Lecornu had faced intense backlash from political opponents when he announced a recent administration that was virtually unchanged since last previous month's removal of his preceding leader, the previous prime minister.
The presented administration was dominated by Macron's allies, leaving the cabinet mostly identical.
Opposition Reaction
Opposition parties said the prime minister had reversed on the "profound break" with previous policies that he had vowed when he took over from the unfavored Bayrou, who was removed on 9 September over a planned spending cuts.
Next Government Course
The uncertainty now is whether the president will decide to terminate the legislature and call another sudden poll.
Jordan Bardella, the leader of the far-right leader's far-right National Rally party, said: "It's impossible to have a restoration of calm without a fresh vote and the national assembly being dissolved."
He continued, "It was very clearly France's leader who chose this administration himself. He has failed to comprehend of the current circumstances we are in."
Election Calls
The National Rally has pushed for another vote, confident they can expand their representation and presence in the legislature.
France has gone through a phase of instability and parliamentary deadlock since the centrist Macron called an indecisive sudden poll last year. The assembly remains divided between the political factions: the liberal wing, the conservative wing and the central bloc, with no absolute dominance.
Financial Pressure
A spending package for next year must be agreed within weeks, even though government factions are at disagreement and his leadership ended in barely three weeks.
Opposition Motion
Political groups from the progressive side to far right were to hold gatherings on the start of the week to decide whether or not to vote to oust France's leader in a no-confidence vote, and it seemed that the government would fall before it had even started work. Lecornu seemingly decided to resign before he could be ousted.
Cabinet Appointments
Most of the big government posts declared on the night before remained the identical, including the legal affairs head as legal affairs leader and the culture minister as cultural affairs leader.
The role of financial affairs leader, which is essential as a fragmented legislature struggles to approve a financial plan, went to a Macron ally, a government partner who had earlier worked as industry and energy minister at the commencement of Macron's second term.
Unexpected Appointment
In a surprise move, the president's political partner, a Macron ally who had acted as financial affairs leader for an extended period of his leadership, returned to administration as national security leader. This angered leaders across the spectrum, who saw it as a indication that there would be no doubt or modification of the president's economic policies.
