Oklahoma City Thunder Begin Title Defense with Dramatic Overtime Win

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander in action

The Thunder star came to the Thunder in 2019.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander delivered the game-winning baskets deep into double overtime as the defending champions started their championship campaign with a narrow win over the Houston Rockets.

Last season's MVP scored 35 points, featuring two clutch free throws with just 2.3 seconds remaining in double OT, giving the champions a winning beginning.

The Rockets' big man led all scorers with 39 points and also connected on a personal-best five shots from beyond the arc.

But the Thunder's rookie, who added 28 points, was instrumental alongside the game's hero.

"Determination and defence," Gilgeous-Alexander commented of their performance. "We know that when we do it defensively we give ourselves a chance no matter what's going on—makes, misses, fortune or misfortune. We did enough defence to get the win. We're still shaking off rust, but it's a good start."

Before the game, the team's championship banner was raised at their arena, while the squad were awarded their title rings.

The Thunder beat the Indiana Pacers in last season's best-of-seven NBA Finals. It was their first title since the franchise relocated in 2008 to Oklahoma City from Seattle, who had claimed the 1979 title.

The Pacers will have the chance to get some early revenge on this Friday when they host the Thunder, while the Rockets return to action on the same day at the Pistons.

In other action, a massive performance of 43 points, 12 boards and nine dimes from Luka Doncic was not enough to stop his new team the Lakers from suffering a 119-109 loss against the Warriors.

Jimmy Butler picked up 31 points and Stephen Curry added 23 points for the road team.

Los Angeles were without the NBA's all-time leading scorer James as he recovers from a back issue.
