Massive Illegal Weapons Operation Sees More than 1,000 Units Confiscated in New Zealand and AU

Law enforcement have seized more than 1,000 guns and weapon pieces during a crackdown focusing on the proliferation of illicit firearms in the country and the island nation.

Transnational Operation Leads to Arrests and Confiscations

This extended international operation resulted in more than 180 detentions, based on statements from customs agents, and the recovery of 281 homemade firearms and components, among them products made by additive manufacturing devices.

Regional Revelations and Arrests

Within NSW, police found several three-dimensional printers alongside glock-style pistols, magazines and fabricated carrying cases, in addition to various pieces.

Regional authorities reported they arrested 45 individuals and took possession of 518 firearms and firearm parts during the effort. Several suspects were faced with violations such as the creation of illegal weapons without proper authorization, shipping illegal products and possessing a digital blueprint for creation of guns – a crime in various jurisdictions.

“Those fabricated pieces might appear colourful, but they are far from playthings. Once assembled, they turn into deadly arms – totally unlawful and highly hazardous,” an experienced detective said in a statement. “This is the reason we’re aiming at the full supply chain, from fabrication tools to imported parts.

“Community security is the foundation of our firearms licensing system. Gun owners must be registered, firearms must be documented, and compliance is mandatory.”

Growing Trend of DIY Weapons

Information gathered for an investigation indicates that in the last half-decade over 9,000 weapons have been reported stolen, and that this year, police executed recoveries of privately manufactured guns in nearly all regional jurisdiction.

Judicial files reveal that the 3D models being manufactured within the country, fuelled by an digital network of creators and supporters that advocate for an “absolute freedom to possess firearms”, are steadily functional and lethal.

Over the past few years the pattern has been from “highly unskilled, barely operational, almost a one-shot weapon” to more advanced guns, authorities reported at the time.

Immigration Interceptions and Web-Based Sales

Components that are difficult to additively manufactured are commonly acquired from online retailers abroad.

A senior immigration officer stated that over 8,000 unlawful weapons, parts and attachments had been found at the customs checkpoint in the most recent accounting period.

“Imported weapon pieces are often put together with other homemade components, creating risky and unregistered weapons appearing on our neighborhoods,” the official added.

“A lot of these items are available for purchase by online retailers, which might cause individuals to mistakenly think they are unregulated on import. Many of these platforms simply place orders from abroad acting as an intermediary without any considerations for import regulations.”

Further Recoveries Throughout Several Regions

Seizures of products among them a bow weapon and fire projector were further executed in the southeastern state, the western territory, the island state and the the central territory, where authorities said they located several homemade guns, along with a fabrication tool in the remote town of the named area.
