France will start intercepting migrant vessels in English Channel after British demands
French officials have consented to begin stopping migrant vessels in the English Channel, following months of insistence from the United Kingdom.
The change in policy comes after the Prime Minister sent a letter to the President asking him to back the initiative and stating there presently "have no effective deterrent" in the maritime passage.
French maritime police will be allowed to stop the small boats at sea, but exclusively prior to they've collected their migrants, according to authoritative statements.
French police have rarely intervened to prevent the heavily loaded boats departing from the coastline because it is considered too great a risk to both officers and individuals.
"It is essential that we implement these tactics this period... We have no effective prevention in the Channel waters."
Currently, a French naval police spokesperson states officers will begin taking action at sea, with the objective of safeguarding lives.
Notably, the official ruled out the use of entanglement devices to stop boats, which had previously been suggested as a potential method to disable the engines of the boats.
This determination to intervene at all is a major advancement, following a brief change towards a stricter approach this summer, which ceased when the previous Interior Minister departed from government.
That was highlighted in the summer month, in the run-up to a summit between the Prime Minister and President, when authorities were witnessed walking into the sea to damage the hulls of a boat.
Now French officials will again be permitted to stop boats prior to they pick up asylum-seeking individuals from the beaches of northern France, however it's uncertain how the small boats will be stopped.
Powerful gusts are currently postponing the commencement of intervention operations and the people-smuggling gangs will be looking for ways to adapt to evade detection, as they have done so often in the past.
The Home Office and Downing Street have been approached for comment.
