Exposing Venezuelan Victory Footage and AI Images of Maduro.

Computer-created pictures claiming to portray Nicolás Maduro under arrest after his apprehension by the United States have gained tens of millions of views online.

How Fake Pictures of Maduro Surfaced Rapidly

The first fake AI image apparently showing him taken off a plane surfaced within hours. The graphic was not shared any verified American sources; it was instead published on X by an account describing itself as an “enthusiast of AI-generated art”.

Verification involved the SynthID tool, which found the image was created or altered with generative AI.

Additional AI-generated images were disseminated in the ensuing hours, purporting to present more angles of Maduro under guard. Discernible identifying marks on these pictures reveal they came from an Instagram account called ultravfx.

SynthID confirms these additional pictures were similarly created or altered AI technology.

Real Photo Posted but Fabrications Continued

Donald Trump released the initial authentic image of Maduro handcuffed aboard the USS Iwo Jima on Saturday morning. But even after the authentic image was released, AI-generated pictures persisted online but were modified to include the gray sweatsuit worn by Maduro.

Online investigation show these altered fabrications were initially shared on the video platform by a digital art profile. Once again, the AI-watermark detector found these further images were produced with AI tools.

Important Facts:

  • Deepfakes gained traction after the news of Maduro's capture.
  • The first fake picture appeared very quickly on platform X.
  • Detection software like Google’s SynthID were used to identify the pictures as synthetic.
  • Fake images continued to spread and be updated despite the release of authentic images.
  • The source of several fabricated images was linked to specific online accounts focused on graphic design.
