Boston Mayor Michelle Wu Addresses President Trump's Warning to Move World Cup Games from Boston
Boston's mayor, Michelle Wu, indicated that the city was ready for a face-off with President Donald Trump regarding his claim that he could instruct FIFA to remove World Cup tournament games from the stadium in Foxborough, located approximately 35 kilometers south-west of Boston.
Mayor Wu appeared on a Boston-based podcast this week to address comments from the White House, which had described her as "far-left." Trump had warned that he would call the head of FIFA if Boston did not "clean up its act."
Much of it is secured by contract so that no single person, even the president, can reverse it.
Wu continued, "We're in a world where for drama, for control, to test limits ... repeated warnings ... are issued at individuals and communities who refuse to back down and comply or be obedient to a hateful agenda."
She further stated, "We are going to continue being ourselves, and that means, sadly, we are going to be in a conversation that is challenging Boston's values." She concluded by emphasizing her commitment for the city, declaring, "Fully committed for our city."
The President's Statements and FIFA Role
Recently, Infantino was photographed with Trump at the Gaza summit in Sharm el-Sheikh. The FIFA president has also been to the Oval Office and given World Cup and Club World Cup awards to Trump as presents.
Earlier, President Trump was asked about recent disturbances in a Boston neighborhood that included a police car being set on fire. Trump replied, "If somebody is doing a bad job, and if I feel there's unsafe conditions, I would call Gianni – the president of FIFA, who's great."
He continued, "I would say: 'We should relocate the games' and they would comply. He might not prefer it. But he would do it very easily." Trump also directly criticized Mayor Wu, stating, "Their mayor is ineffective ... she's radical left, and they're dominating parts of Boston. That's a strong claim, right?"
Previous Warnings and 2026 World Cup Details
Trump has previously suggested that he would take the similar discussion with Infantino about moving games from Seattle and San Francisco, which are part of the 16 host cities across North America.
The United States is joint hosts the 2026 tournament with Mexico and Canada. The 48-team event is planned to be held from June 11 to July 19 in the coming year.
